General Manager Jackson Tan kick-started the event with an opening speech that introduces the concept and rationale behind the convention. He also walked employees through the company’s profits and losses to date, the overall budget and forecast for 2015 before breaking the numbers down by department. The management plans to host the town hall meeting quarterly.

While making it easy for the management to consistently update employees on the company’s progress, it simultaneously also allows employees to interact and voice out any concerns they may have on various issues. This was done as a follow-up to the feedback from the employee engagement survey on the two-way communication between employees and management conducted in 2014.

Taking the stage after Mr. Jackson Tan’s presentation, Managing Director Saw Boo Guan also reiterated his stance on this, highlighting his hope for employees to enunciate their opinions freely. He further elaborated on the areas to be prioritized during the second half of 2015, including customer focus and staff development.

“Meeting the budget is really what we want to do, to focus on the customer (and) deliver promptly,” said Mr. Saw Boo Guan. Subsequently, he revealed that all Yanmar employees across the globe will be participating in an online survey in September this year.

The Employee Engagement Committee (EEC) also took the chance to introduce their quirky team, updating fellow colleagues on the progress of their proposals and general activities over the past few months. The EEC was first announced on Mar 3 this year, and officially formed soon after. Their primary functions include representing employees to propose improvements to management.

The EEC was founded on the hopes of further bridging communication gaps and encouraging organization-wide transparency. In a nutshell, YASC’s first ever town hall meeting serves as one of the many steps the organization will be taking to improve its two-way communication and much more.
