Depok, August 6, 2026 – PT Yanmar Diesel Indonesia, IPB University, and Faeger Co Ltd have launched a research project to evaluate the combination of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) irrigation with the use of rice husk biochar to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining stable crop yields.

Rice cultivation is a fundamental aspect of Indonesia's food security. As one of the largest rice producers in the world, the country relies on an irrigated rice system to meet domestic needs. However, rice farming also contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions in the agriculture sector, especially methane (CH₄) produced in continuously flooded fields.

Besides that, a large amount of rice husks and other agricultural residues are produced every year, many of which are not used optimally or are simply burned in the open, causing environmental concerns and missed opportunities for added value. This is the background of this research.

The research that started in April 2026 at the IPB University experimental field will run for one year under controlled conditions. This study tests various combinations of water management (AWD) and biochar treatments to evaluate their effects on greenhouse gas emissions (CH₄ and N₂O), soil quality, water use efficiency, plant growth, and rice yields.

By scientifically evaluating this integrated approach, this project aims to strengthen climate mitigation in rice production and improve soil and resource management for long-term sustainability.
