When it came to launching his new plant hire venture, businessman Stephen Clark invested in two Yanmar models from Cumbrian-based equipment dealer Taylor & Braithwaite. Since taking delivery of the new units, his operation has grown from strength to strength.

Starting from scratch

Landowner Stephen Clark runs Braithwaite Farm in Keswick, Cumbria. With drainage, ditching, carrying, emptying and stacking all regular tasks, Stephen invested in a 5.5 tonne excavator from local dealer Taylor & Braithwaite back in 2018.

Perfect for a wide range of difficult tasks, Stephen began to receive regular requests from friends, associates and other local farmers, who were all interested in hiring his machine. Spotting an untapped opportunity, Stephen made the decision to expand his fleet and launched self-drive equipment hire firm Keswick Plant Hire shortly afterwards.

Starting with just his five-tonne excavator, business got off to a flying start. However, while flexible, the five-tonne model was only suitable for a limited number of jobs. After carefully evaluating his options, Stephen returned to Taylor & Braithwaite and purchased two new Yanmar models – an SV08-1AS micro excavator and C08 tracked carrier.

Compact, lightweight and easy to transport, the SV08-1AS is perfect for a wide range of tasks. At only 680mm wide, the slimline model fits easily through a standard door, making it perfect for indoor applications, as well as pipe laying and landscaping tasks.

The C08 tracked dumper, on the other hand, is the perfect solution for removing building materials and waste from worksites, with elevation capability allowing users to unload directly into skips or over fences. With an 800kg payload, it’s the perfect size for most rental tasks, while a durable design and class-leading skip thickness guarantee a long lifespan.

Performance, efficiency and reliability

Since taking delivery of his Yanmar models, Stephen has been hugely impressed with their performance, flexibility, compact dimensions and reliability. With each machine needing to be ‘rental-proof’ yet deliver class-leading results, the SV08-1AS and C08 have exceeded expectations.

Stephen commented: “My initial impressions of both Yanmar models were really positive. Despite its compact dimensions, the SV08-1AS is a really impressive micro excavator. It’s easy to operate, intuitive and ergonomic, but also delivers far above its class. Its tight turning circle makes it perfect for use in jobsites where space comes at a premium, while its impressive digging power dramatically improves efficiencies.

“Already, it’s been used for a number of tasks by farmers, developers and builders in the local area – all with excellent feedback. The C08, is similarly reliable, robust and manufactured to last. It’s a great compact unit for carrying and earthmoving – surprisingly powerful and flexible, despite its compact dimensions.”

Already, both models have been flying out the door for rental jobs across the county, which has helped Keswick Plant Hire to get off to an impressive start. Stephen added: “Because we are local, our prices are extremely competitive and include delivery to site and operator training. We’re beginning to receive enquiries from further afield too, which is really positive and demonstrates how fast word travels about the performance and capability of our equipment.”
