The Yanmar Cup 2016 on Lake Biwa fosters the growth of Japan’s marine sports culture

This spring’s Yanmar Cup 2016 on Lake Biwa, Japan expands its scale, fostering further growth of Japan’s marine sports culture as it marks the 20th time running of its predecessor tournament, the “Yanmar Cup,” which is held bi-annually every spring and autumn.

Building on the previous year, this year saw 62 boats and 333 people gathered under the clear blue skies on Japan’s Lake Biwa as they came face to face in a battle for the grand championship trophy of the Yanmar Cup. Assistance from the governor of Shiga prefecture, Daizo Mikazuki and the mayor of Moriyama City, Mr. Miyamoto, attested to the vast popularity of this yacht race on the waters of Lake Biwa. This was further highlighted by the appearance of the Oracle Team USA CEO and legendary sailor, Russell Coutts. From firing the starter pistol to commence the race, through to mingling with participants at the after party, his presence bolstered liveliness and excitement.
