Havbør AS launches the Vikanøy with Yanmar propulsion

Norwegian owner Havbør AS has welcomed a new addition to the fleet. The Vikanøy, which is 44.2 meters long and 11.5 meters wide, is destined to ply the waters around Norway where she will be operational later this year as a purse seiner, encircling herring and mackerel, or deploying net gear to land cod and haddock.

There’s a factory on the main deck for processing, and an additional 500m3 of storage with refrigerated salt water (RSW) tanks for live fish. Up to 8 crew will work onboard.

The boat was built by the Özata Shipyard, based in Turkey, with design by NSK Ship Design from Harstad, Norway. From the start, much thought went into making the vessel as efficient as possible. Owner, manufacturer and designer worked together to reduce the CO2 and NOx per kilo of fish caught.

Mats Nygaard Johnsen is CEO at NSK. He says, “It was great to work so closely with the ship owner and the yard. They are both so experienced, between us we pulled together proven systems with the very latest technology to create something special. By optimising the hull lines, we can really streamline the vessel, but it’s how the machinery is managed that makes the difference to the emissions.”

For propulsion, a Yanmar 6EY26W was selected, delivering 1,920 kW at 750 RPM, with a shaft generator for variable speed. This drives a controllable pitch propeller system made by Finnoy.

Johnsen continues, “You start with the right propulsion engine then factor in all the other onboard equipment like the winches, cranes and so on. It’s the way the whole package is put together that makes us proud. We strongly believe that in cooperation with the yard, we can utilise this design for future clients wanting operational efficiency as well as a high level of facilities for the crew on board.”
