At the Waterfall House in Japan’s Yoro Valley, gardener Tasuku Suzuki is shaping a landscape in harmony with nature – restoring balance to a rare site where water, stone and craft come together.
Tucked deep within Japan’s Yoro Valley, where water carves its own path through rock and forest, a quiet transformation is taking place. Here, beside a flowing river and a small, cascading waterfall, Anton Wörmann’s (Anton in Japan) Waterfall House is being brought back to life as a home rooted in its surroundings.
A Swedish-born creative and Yanmar Compact Equipment (Yanmar) Brand Ambassador, Anton has built a reputation for restoring abandoned homes across rural Japan, breathing new life into forgotten spaces while celebrating traditional craftsmanship. At the heart of this latest project is Tasuku Suzuki, a gardener whose work begins with careful observation.
“I wanted to restore it without destroying what was already here,” he explains.
A craftsman from Tsuchiya Landscaping in Chiba, Suzuki specializes in creating gardens that feel as though they have always belonged. At the Waterfall House, his role spans planting, stone placement, and shaping how the landscape will evolve over time.
A landscape in motion
It’s a rare site. One where nature has remained largely untouched, even after years of abandonment. The river runs close to the house, and when rain falls, the terrain shifts and flows with it – a landscape in constant motion. For Suzuki, that fluidity demands sensitivity. “Our priority is to preserve the original landscape and make the most of the natural terrain,” he says.Working alongside Anton, decisions are often made instinctively; guided by the conditions of the land rather than a fixed plan. Stones are positioned with care, plants selected for how they will grow, settle, and coexist over time.
Craft and collaboration
That relationship between land, craft, and collaboration defines the project. “Working with Anton is what makes this enjoyable,” Suzuki reflects. “That spontaneous energy drives the project in a good direction.”Each element of the garden is shaped through this shared understanding, balancing Suzuki’s traditional expertise with Anton’s evolving vision for the space.
Precision in practice
While the philosophy is rooted in tradition, the work is supported by modern tools. Compact Yanmar machinery allows Suzuki to operate with precision in a tight, sensitive environment, helping to minimise disruption while achieving a high level of detail. For Suzuki, this approach is built on years of experience. He has used Yanmar equipment since his apprentice days, following in the footsteps of the craftsmen before him. “They’re smooth to operate, tough and durable – qualities I value highly,” he says.
Restoring what was already there
At its core, the project is about restoration – of landscape, of craft, and of a way of working that honours what came before. As the Waterfall House continues to take shape, its garden evolves alongside it; slowly, deliberately, and guided by its surroundings.Because here, the environment sets the direction.
It encapsulates Yanmar’s Hanasaka philosophy – “to make flowers bloom” – bringing new life through care, precision and an understanding of what each place needs to thrive; with each intervention responding to the flow of water and the contours of the terrain to support the landscape’s natural balance and regeneration over time.
