Energy Saving Disaster Prevention Electricity Generation

Data centers are critical facilities that process and store massive amounts of information, and their operation depends on a stable power supply. In this section, we explain why securing power is so essential.

A data center is a facility that houses large numbers of computers and servers, where vast amounts of information are processed to support websites, applications, online games, autonomous driving and other digital services that are essential for our daily life.

Because data centers operate vast numbers of computers, they require a large amount of electricity. In Japan, data centers account for approximately 2 % of the country’s annual power demand. With the rapid development of AI, electricity needs are expected to grow even further. According to a study by the Japan Science and Technology Agency on the current and projected power consumption of data centers, demand is anticipated to continue increasing in the years ahead.

As electricity supply is critical for data centers, any disruption can have serious consequences—websites may become inaccessible, applications and systems may stop functioning, and daily life can be significantly affected.

Ensuring a stable power supply is essential for data center operations. To achieve this, companies develop a Business Continuity Planning (BCP) which outlines how operations can continue without interruption during unexpected disruptions. For example, a BCP ensures that data centers remain operational even in the event of a power outage.

Power is secured through multiple layers. In the event of an outage, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) batteries provide backup power, followed by emergency generators. Because generators require fuel, operators must secure reserves or use natural gas to sustain operation during prolonged outages.

More recently, data centers have also begun adopting renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, which not only strengthen energy security but also reduce environmental impact.

Data centers handle vast amounts of information. For this reason, securing power supply and establishing a solid BCP are essential to ensure uninterrupted operation even during outages.

At Yanmar, we offer solutions such as emergency generators, environmentally friendly cogeneration systems, and renewable energy options to help secure reliable power. If your organization faces challenges in energy management, please feel free to contact us for support.
