SE4ALL stands for “Sustainable Energy for All” and is a United Nations initiative launched in 2011 by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The initiative sets three objectives to be achieved by 2030: (1) ensure universal access to modern energy services; (2) double the rate of improvement of energy efficiency; and (3) double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

This goal aims to make sure that everyone in the world has access to energy that is safe for both their health and the environment. Currently, 1.1 billion people lack access to the energy they need in daily life, and 2.9 billion people do not have clean energy for cooking or heating. Many rely on wood chips, coal, and livestock manure as fuel—sources that produce harmful smoke. As a result, 4.3 million people die each year from lung diseases caused by indoor air pollution, a number that exceeds annual deaths from HIV.
Without access to electricity, economic opportunities are also extremely limited, making it harder for people to escape poverty. The primary goal is to provide these people with clean energy and help them rise out of poverty.

To keep energy use sustainable, it is critical to improve energy efficiency through innovation and conservation. The target is to raise the annual rate of improvement from 1.2 % in 2009 to 2.4 % by 2030. As global energy demand continues to rise, boosting efficiency will help increase productivity and economic growth, while also cutting fossil fuel use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

To ensure sustainable energy use, it is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that drive climate change. This objective seeks to increase the share of renewable sources—such as wind, hydropower, biomass, and solar—from 15 % in 2015 to 30 % by 2030.

In Japan, both the government and industry have worked to improve energy efficiency since the two oil shocks. Building on this experience, the Energy Conservation Center, Japan (ECCJ), now serves as an international hub for promoting energy efficiency under the SE4ALL initiative.

The city of Toyama was selected by SE4ALL as a “Model City for Energy Efficiency Improvement,” and hosted the SE4ALL Forum in October 2015.

Yanmar offers renewable energy solutions, including biogas power generation using food waste, biodiesel power generation from used cooking oil, and waste heat power generation that utilizes small amounts of hot water as a heat source.
