Open New Opportunities with Hydrogen

In order to achieve a low-carbon society,
the off-road industry is currently considering electrification and new power sources.
As part of our commitment to a carbon-neutral society,
Yanmar Power Technology is working on developing
hydrogen concept engine technology specifically designed for off-road machinery.

Hydrogen features The eco-friendly and sustainable
fuel of the future.

GHGfree

Hydrogen engines produce no carbon dioxide during combustion, minimizing environmental impact. When generated from renewable energy sources, hydrogen itself does not release GHGs.

Hydrogen Engine Derived from
Newly Developed Diesel Engine

Our newly developed concept hydrogen engine is based on Yanmar Power Technology's recently introduced diesel engine 4TN101 (3.8L). Designed for structural compatibility with the diesel version, it allows for a seamless transition to hydrogen power without significant modifications to existing vehicles. Yanmar has been a global supplier of off-road powertrains for many years. Recently, Yanmar has been adhering to international emission regulations and leveraging our advanced technologies to support multi-fuel options (gas, bio, HVO, etc.). We are committed to contributing to a low-carbon society.

Yanmar offers a wide range of off-road machinery, including tractors, excavators, and various other equipment. While diesel and gas engines are currently used in these machines, we are actively developing hydrogen engines to achieve carbon neutrality as part of Yanmar's Green Challenge 2050 initiative.

Aims to achieve the same specifications as diesel engines while overcoming the challenges particular to hydrogen.

Although it is a concept engine, the project's main goal was to determine if industrial engines could be successfully replaced with hydrogen engines to satisfy customer needs. Using the diesel engine 4TN101 as a foundation, we conducted simulations to study specifications while maintaining a high level of design commonality. We also created an environment that minimizes environmental impact during the actual engine development. Despite the differences in combustion systems and basic features between diesel and hydrogen, industrial engines require high responsiveness to operate stably under varying engine speeds. Our challenge is to adapt hydrogen engines for diverse applications.

Next generation energy gaining worldwide attention.

Beyond finding stable combustion methods, there are ongoing efforts to integrate hydrogen into industrial machinery and develop efficient replenishment processes. While hydrogen is flammable and requires safety measures, it is abundant on Earth and can be produced from renewable sources like wind, solar, and geothermal energy, ensuring an endless supply. With superior energy density compared to electricity, hydrogen is being recognized worldwide, including in developed countries, for its potential. For nearly a decade, Yanmar has been at the forefront of developing marine-based hydrogen systems, transitioning from demonstration tests to full-scale implementation aimed at commercializing this promising fuel alternative.

Extend the scope of our proposals towards a carbon-neutral society.

We aim to broaden our approach towards achieving a carbon-neutral society by leveraging a mix of hydrogen engines, existing diesel engines, and electric powertrains. Each type of off-road machinery representes a unique application, and our goal is to offer the best possible solutions tailored to our customers' needs. By diversifying our product lineup, we can provide optimal proposals that utilize the strengths of different powertrains.
