Carbon Neutral Renewable Energy

RE100 is a global corporate initiative launched in 2014 by the UK-based NGO The Climate Group, in partnership with the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). It brings together companies with ambitious environmental goals to accelerate the global shift toward decarbonization.
The initiative’s main objective is to transition electricity used by member companies to 100 % renewable energy. By joining RE100, companies can share their environmental initiatives and gain access to ESG investment recognition and valuable opportunities for information exchange.

RE100 is a global initiative launched in 2014 by The Climate Group*1 and CDP*2 to accelerate the worldwide transition to decarbonization. It brings together leading companies committed to showcasing ambitious environmental efforts.

The name RE100 stands for “Renewable Energy 100 %,” reflecting its goal: converting the electricity used by member companies to 100 % renewable energy. The initiative targets large corporations with global influence. As of March 2020, 225 companies from around the world had joined.

To become a member, companies must meet specific criteria, including committing to 100 % renewable electricity and submitting annual progress reports.

The number of participants continues to grow, especially in Europe, North America, and China, with many companies setting target years to reach their 100 % renewable energy goals.

*2 An NGO with the aim of providing information about companies’ environmental efforts to investors.

By participating in RE100, companies can demonstrate their commitment to environmental action, such as reducing carbon emissions.

This not only helps build trust with general consumers but also serves as a key factor in attracting millennial investors focused on ESG investment.

As demand for environmental responsibility grows each year, responding effectively has become increasingly important.
Participation in RE100 also provides valuable opportunities to exchange knowledge and insights with other member companies on topics like the use of renewable energy.

While renewable energy remains relatively expensive, companies promoting RE100 should consider the introduction of in-house power supply facilities as part of their environmental strategy.
