Their high power, durability and exceptional environmental performance will support the on water operations of the America’s Cup and help deliver the excitement of the America’s Cup to spectators on site. Having supported ORACLE TEAM USA through its previous victory in the 34th America’s Cup, Yanmar will again join the champions in Bermuda when racing kicks off on the 26th of May, 2017 in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers.

The America's Cup

The America's Cup brings teams representing yacht clubs from around the world together to compete at the top of sailing in the world's premier maritime event. Founded in 1851, the event has a history that stretches back over-160 years with the "Auld mug" widely known as the oldest trophy in international sport. In recent times, the event has become known as the "F1 of the ocean", with teams incorporating the latest advances in engineering, material sciences, boat building, fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, and meteorology in a high speed race across the waves. The very best high performance engine technology is required to support the teams.

ORACLE TEAM USA

ORACLE TEAM USA is the defending champion of the America's Cup, after winning the last two editions in 2010 and 2013.

Skipper Jimmy Spithill led his team to an inspiring comeback win over Team New Zealand in the last Cup. Down 8-1, and facing match point, ORACLE TEAM USA won the final eight races of the match to win the America's Cup 9-8. Now, Spithill is preparing to lead his team to a ‘three-peat' — a third consecutive victory.

Spithill, along with COO Grant Simmer and sailing team manager and tactician Tom Slingsby, has assembled a younger, stronger crew, capable of facing up to the massive physical and mental challenges posed by the new America's Cup Class boats.

The design team features many of the top American and international yacht designers in the world, while ORACLE TEAM USA's boat-builders and shore crew are second to none.

Yanmar's Technology

Yanmar provides both the marine engine (8LV inboard marine diesel engine) and drive system (ZT sterndrive systems) for the Yanmar chase boats, which are critical to the team's efforts on the water. The boats, which can reach speeds of over 50 knots (92.6 km/h), constantly follow the race boats and not only provide necessary support, but also track race progress, gather and analyze real time data on the crew's performance and are ready to provide support for any eventuality. The chase boats have to be able to respond with speed, power and reliability in extremely demanding and rigorous conditions, and the Yanmar marine diesels and drive systems are held in high regard by the team.
